Didn’t Get the Results You Hoped For? Don’t Panic. Here’s What to Do Next

Whether you’ve just received your A-level, International Baccalaureate (IB), or other qualification results, results day can feel intense, especially if you’re waiting on big decisions. Whatever your outcome, remember: you have options, and you’re not alone.

Why Haven’t I Heard from My University?

If your firm or insurance choice has gone quiet, don’t panic, it’s likely due to the UCAS embargo. In the days leading up to A-level results day, most UK universities are required to pause communication about admission decisions, even if they already know your outcome.

This embargo applies to all applicants, not just those taking A-levels. Whether you’re in the UK, the EU, or further afield, and regardless of the qualification you’ve taken, most universities choose to delay all decision updates until after results day to stay compliant.

So, if you’re wondering why your offer hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s probably not about your results. Universities are simply waiting for the official release before they reach out.

What If I Miss My Grades?

If you don’t meet the conditions of your firm or insurance offers, try not to panic. You’ll likely be released into Clearing – a system that helps students find university places still available.

Clearing isn’t a “last resort”, it’s a chance to find a course that might suit you even better. Every year, thousands of students take this route and go on to thrive at their chosen universities.

My experience in UK universities shows that Clearing often opens doors students hadn’t considered before, and sometimes, those doors lead to better outcomes.

Can I Apply Directly to a University?

Yes, you can!

Some UK and UK-affiliated universities are still open to new applications from EU students in August. If you’re just now considering studying in the UK, there’s still time, but you’ll need to act quickly.

We’re in touch with a variety of institutions that can review late applications from well-prepared students. This includes universities for a wide range of interests and budgets. For example:

  • The University of Sunderland, which is known for its responsive admissions team, especially during this time of year, and are open to working with well-prepared students at this stage.
  • The Lancaster University campus in Leipzig, which offers the opportunity to earn a highly-ranked UK degree while studying in a dynamic German city.
  • Istituto Marangoni, which has options for creative students interested in fashion and design.

While not formally partnered (yet), we can guide you through their options at no charge to you.

It is of utmost importance to make sure you have your qualifications and finances in order. Being organized can make the process smoother and improve your chances of being accepted.

How Should I Prepare?

If you’re entering Clearing or applying now for the first time, here’s how to stay on top of things:

Check UCAS Hub early on results day to confirm your application status.

Have your documents ready: grades, UCAS ID (if applicable), personal statement, English Language qualification (if applicable) and passport.

Start researching courses and universities that fit your goals.

Make sure your finances are sorted, especially if applying directly.

Reach out for support – you don’t have to do this alone.
